Elisa julkaisi ensimmäisenä operaattorina palveluidensa päästösäästöluvut (englanniksi)

The leading Nordic communications services provider Elisa, Gaia’s client, published today its calculations showing a great emission reduction potential of the ICT sector.

According to the new calculations, for example cloud services offered by Elisa reduce energy consumption by 94%. Globally, the ICT (information and communication technology) sector can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2020. This potential is five-fold compared to the ICT sector’s own carbon footprint. Energy efficiency, solutions to reduce unnecessary travelling, cloud computing and technological developments are the key factors to reduce emissions and improve profitability.

Elisa also published calculation principles and information on emission reductions achievable with different ICT services. These concrete figures help companies and other organizations in planning their emission reduction activities. Gaia was consulting Elisa with these calculations.

”In addition to virtual data center solutions, for example services improving energy efficiency of real estates can help to reduce emissions. Solutions such as teleworking or multifunctional use of space can reduce energy consumption by 35%”, says Kimmo Pentikäinen, Director of Research Collaboration & Environmental Affairs at Elisa Corporation.

Calculations show that Elisa’s services helped to achieve 2 867 tCO2 reduction in carbon dioxide emissions –– during the second half of the year 2010. This is as much as 19% compared to Elisa’s total emissions in second half of 2009. This is equivalent to emissions caused by driving 16 million kilometers with an average passenger car. Elisa also focuses on reducing the company’s own carbon footprint.

“The ICT sector can have a positive influence by offering products and services that help to create a more energy efficient world. I’m glad to see that large and influential companies such as Gaia’s client Elisa are actively involved in pursuing a climate friendly future. Recently, Gaia has helped many companies and other organizations in building climate strategies that involve business travelling policies. ICT solutions are always an essential part of the climate mitigation strategies we offer to our customers”, says Pasi Rinne, Chairman of the Board of Gaia Group.
