The Nordic region embodies a significant potential to boost Sustainable Ocean Economy

The Nordic countries hold a significant capacity to foster sustainable blue growth through several strongholds, according to a new report published today.

Oceans and seas have always played a significant role in the development of the Nordic countries. As the global ocean economy is rapidly expanding, the importance of ocean ecosystems and the sustainable use of oceans is an increasing global concern.

As part of the Nordic Innovation’s program on Sustainable Ocean Economy, Gaia carried out a mapping of Nordic strongholds. Our aim was to identify business areas where the countries are already leading and where cooperation across the region could help advance new opportunities for sustainable growth and innovation.

Nordic strongholds were found in many industries, from developing sustainable aquaculture and advanced offshore energy sites to automation and decarbonisation of ocean transport. The Nordics are especially accomplished in technology development and digital know-how, and they host outstanding innovation ecosystems and testbeds.
